Ziel des Journal of Modern European History (JMEH) ist es, nationale Grenzen programmatisch zu überwinden. Als Gemeinschaftsunternehmen europäischer Historiker trägt es der fortschreitenden Internationalisierung der Geschichtswissenschaft Rechnung und versteht sich als Forum für Historiker weltweit, die ein gemeinsames Interesse an der Geschichte Europas verbindet. In dieser Absicht lässt sich das Journal von folgenden Grundsätzen leiten:
1. Jedes Heft enthält ein "Forum", in dem zumindest ein freier Beitrag übergreifende Probleme und Fragestellungen der modernen europäischen Geschichte diskutiert.
2. Jedes Heft ist einem Thema gewidmet, das für mindestens drei Länder vergleichend behandelt werden soll, und zwar über den häufigen Drei-Länder-Vergleich zwischen Deutschland, Frankreich und England hinaus. Die Zeitschrift verfolgt nicht zuletzt die Absicht, nach dem Ende des Ost-West-Gegensatzes auch die Wissenschaften stärker zusammenzuführen.
3. Die Beiträge werden in drei Sprachen veröffentlicht: englisch, französisch, deutsch.
4. Zeitlich konzentriert sich die Zeitschrift auf die letzten drei Jahrhunderte. Themen aus der frühen Neuzeit sind allerdings ebenso wenig ausgeschlossen wie epochenübergreifende Vergleiche.
5. Das Journal ist für alle methodischen und theoretischen Ansätze offen.
6. Die Zeitschrift ist auch keinem bestimmten oder gar programmatischen Europabegriff verpflichtet. Deshalb ist die europäische Ausrichtung auch nicht europazentrisch gemeint. Im Gegenteil, sie schließt den Außenvergleich in globaler Perspektive emphatisch mit ein.
Das JMEH erscheint vier Mal im Jahr.

Abstract
The aim of the Journal of Modern European History (JMEH) is to overcome national boundaries thematically. Edited by historians from different countries, it is a response to advancing internationalisation, which is taking place in thinking and writing about history as much as anywhere else. The journal sees itself as a forum for historians all over the world who share a common interest in the history of Europe. With this aim in mind, the journal is governed by the following principles:
1. Every volume contains a “Forum”, in which at least one longer contribution discusses general problems and questions of modern European history.
2. Every volume is devoted to one broad topic area, which covers at least three countries considerably moving beyond the frequent three-nation comparison between Germany, France and England. Following the end of the East-West dichotomy, one of the main aims of the journal is to bring the academic traditions of eastern and western Europe closer together.
3. The articles are published in three languages: English, French and German.
4. The journal concentrates on the last three centuries. Topics from the Early Modern period or those spanning different epochs are by no means excluded.
5. The journal is open to all methodological and theoretical approaches.
6. The journal does not subscribe to any particular or programmatic concept of “Europe”. The European orientation is thus not designed to be merely Eurocentric; on the contrary, it emphatically includes comparison with the non-European world in a global perspective.
The JMEH is published in four issues a year.
